“Memories at Dragon Lake,” 2021

CAAL (Coalition of Asian American Leaders)

Hmong elders have always warned us not to get too close to the waters of Lake Phalen. There’s a dragon down there, they’d tell us. Apparently, this dragon lives down in the depths underneath the waves, lurking for their next soul to take.

I recently moved to St. Paul back in September after six years in Chicago. After watching my grandmother’s funeral through Zoom, I wanted to be closer to family. I couldn’t fathom saying any more goodbyes through a screen again. But what does it mean to return home when your elders have passed and your parents are aging; when your siblings are grown and your friends have their own families?”

Queer Paj Ntaub

(Story cloth), 2020

As a 2020 fellow of The SEAD Project’s fall cohort, I wanted to honor the accomplishments of Hmong LGBTQ members that came before me. Through research, interviews, and collaborations, me and another fellow, Milly Pil, created this queer Hmong story cloth.

Story cloths were created in Thai refugee camps during the Vietnam War as a way to preserve oral history. In a hetero-patriarchal culture, I wanted to use a traditional art form as a way of taking up queer space.

Dad's Story.jpg

24 x 24, 2021

Expanding upon my dad’s story, I took the words he wrote about his life and used excerpts for this collage. In this portrait (left), he is 24 years old living in Gien, France. I created this piece while I was also 24.
